January Transfer Window 2027: The Sagas That Will Dominate the Winter

The window opens on 1 January and closes on 1 February. From Julian Alvarez to Yankuba Minteh, these are the stories that refuse to go away.

The summer window may be closed, but the transfer market never really sleeps. The January window opens on Friday, 1 January 2027 and closes at 11pm UK time on Monday, 1 February 2027, which is 2am on 2 February in Kenya. Here are the sagas most likely to dominate the winter.

1. Julian Alvarez and Barcelona

The biggest unfinished story of the summer. Barcelona wanted the Argentine forward, but Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone refused to let him go and the window shut without a deal. If Alvarez’s relationship with the club cools, a January blockbuster cannot be ruled out.

2. Liverpool’s right wing search

Liverpool do not have a natural right winger in their squad, and Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh has been strongly linked. A move for the Gambian international is considered one of the more plausible deals of the window, although Brighton will not sell cheaply.

3. Chelsea and Manu Kone

Chelsea failed to land Roma midfielder Manu Kone in the summer and are reported to be ready to return to the table in January. The France international would add power and ball carrying to Xabi Alonso’s midfield.

4. Alejandro Balde’s future

The Barcelona left back was leaning towards a move before the summer deadline, but the deal fell through. His place under Hansi Flick appears less secure than it once did, and another approach in January would surprise few.

5. Martin Zubimendi at Arsenal

The Spanish midfielder is reportedly willing to review his future if his role at the Emirates remains limited. Arsenal, meanwhile, are expected to look for another attacker after criticism that their play has been too cautious.

  • Joshua Zirkzee: one of several forwards expected to be on the move

Will clubs keep spending?

Premier League clubs spent a record 3.49 billion pounds last summer, so January budgets may be tighter. But for clubs chasing titles, European places or survival, one smart signing can define a season. Bookmark our Transfer Centre for every confirmed deal and credible rumour.
