Inside the Record 3.49 Billion Pound Summer: The Signings Already Shaping the Season

Premier League clubs spent a record sum last summer with five deals above 100 million pounds. Seven rounds in, here is who is already delivering.

The 2026 summer transfer window was the wildest in Premier League history. Clubs spent a record 3.49 billion pounds, five players changed hands for more than 100 million pounds each, and the British transfer record was broken twice. Seven rounds into the season, which of those deals are paying off?

Manchester City: biggest spenders, best start

City backed Enzo Maresca with the largest single-window outlay any Premier League club has ever made. The headline arrival was Enzo Fernandez for a reported 125 million pounds, a fee that matches the league’s most expensive signing. The British record also fell when City brought in Elliot Anderson. So far, the investment looks justified: City are top of the table with seven wins from seven.

Chelsea’s deep rebuild

Chelsea broke the British record again with the signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa and added a long list of new faces under Xabi Alonso, blending young talent with experienced heads. Henderson scored twice in the 5-1 win over Bournemouth, a sign the mix of youth and experience is starting to work.

Arsenal’s early business

The champions completed most of their business early, and the standout arrival was Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes. Guimaraes has made an instant impact, scoring the winner in the 2-1 comeback against Leeds on 10 October.

Summer window in numbers

  • Total Premier League spend: 3.49 billion pounds (record)
  • Deals worth 100 million pounds or more: 5
  • Biggest fee: Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City, about 125 million pounds
  • British transfer record: broken twice, by Manchester City and Chelsea

Smart money at Brighton

Not every success story cost a fortune. Brighton signed right back Costinha from Olympiacos, winger Zadok Yohanna from AIK and defender Pascal Struijk from Leeds for a combined fee far below the headline deals elsewhere. They sit third after hammering Crystal Palace 5-0.

Deals that left England

Some notable names headed abroad. Gabriel Jesus joined Barcelona from Arsenal on deadline day in a deal worth around 10 million euros, while Barcelona also completed a move for Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon, although Newcastle have publicly stated the first instalment of that fee has not yet been paid.

The verdict so far

It is early, but the clubs that spent with a clear plan, City at the top end and Brighton at the value end, are being rewarded. With the January window less than three months away, expect the spending to resume.
